Marcellus Shale

When fully developed, the Marcellus Shale – a vast geologic formation stretching from southwestern Pennsylvania and into West Virginia – has the potential to be the second largest natural gas field in the world.

Washington County, Pennsylvania is the epicenter of the Marcellus.  The county was home to the first Marcellus well and the first horizontal well. Today, it boasts the most permits and active wells.  And there is more drilling and production here than any other county in Pennsylvania.
